Jennifer Higdon, Guest Composer
February 2, 2010  |  Posted by Tina Kierce  |  0 Comments

MEET Jennifer at Backstage with the Artist - Friday, Feb. 19 at 12 noon - FREE brownbag.  Esther Simplot Performing Arts Academy.
2010 Grammy Award Winner, Jennifer Higdon “Best Contemporary Classical Composer”   Special guest of the Boise Philharmonic NEW WORLDS – February 19 & 20

The Boise Philharmonic’s February concert includes Antonin Dvorak’s tribute to America - “New World” Symphony No. 9  and Grammy Award winner - guest composer Jennifer Higdon’s Concerto for Orchestra.  Led by Maestro Robert Franz, the Boise Philharmonic unites the historical masterworks of Dvorak’s first experience in America to Best Contemporary Classical Composer, Jennifer Higdon’s orchestral showcase – Concerto for Orchestra.

WHEN:  February 19 & 20 WHERE:  Fri – College of Idaho’s Jewett Auditorium @ 8:00 p.m.     and              Sat – BSU’s Morrison Center @ 8:00 p.m.

For the second year, Maestro Franz brings a award winning and influential composers to Boise.  After winning a Grammy for her Percussion Concerto just last month, composer Jennifer Higdon will visit Idaho to discuss and hear a performance of her Concerto for Orchestra.  In addition to being one of the most performed living American composers working today, Higdon is the recipient of many awards, including a Pew Fellowship, a Guggenheim Fellowship and two awards from the American Academy of Arts & Letters. Her list of commissioners range from the Philadelphia Orchestra to the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra and such notable artists as Hilary Hahn.  While in Idaho, Higdon will be working with aspiring composers studying at the College of Idaho, speak to concert-goers about her piece and be available at Friday, the 19th’s Backstage with the Artist to discuss life as a composer.

While a typical concerto (for violin or piano for instance) features only one soloist on one instrument, Higdon’s Concerto for Orchestra offers audiences the opportunity to hear the entire orchestra featured as a soloist.  This work will afford the entire orchestra, its instrument families, and its talented individual players the opportunity to show off on stage.

Antonin Dvorak was at the height of his career when he decided to make a trip to the “New World” of America.  While visiting, the composer had the opportunity to study a variety of music he had never heard before and he was quite taken with the melodies of Africa-American spirituals and Native American folk tunes.  His Symphony No. 9 “From the New World” is the result of his efforts to combine his masterful talent for European “classical” music with these new sounds and this piece has become a favorite in concert halls throughout the world.
